HIAB vs Mobile Crane

When you need to lift and move heavy or oversized items on site, two common options are HIAB lorry-mounted cranes and mobile cranes.

Both are powerful and versatile, but the right choice depends on your load size, site constraints, timelines, and budget.

In this guide, we break down HIAB vs crane capabilities, outline when to use a HIAB, and explain how Sussex Transport’s fleet and expertise can help you get the job done safely and efficiently.

What’s the Difference Between a HIAB and a Mobile Crane?

While both HIABs and mobile cranes are designed to lift and move heavy loads, the way they work and the types of jobs they’re suited for are quite different.

HIAB (Lorry-Mounted Crane)

A HIAB is a truck fitted with a hydraulic crane, allowing one vehicle to both transport and lift loads. It can drive directly to your site, collect, transport, deliver, and position the load exactly where you need it, and then move on to the next job without the need for separate transport or lifting equipment. This makes it ideal for projects where speed, flexibility, and minimal site disruption are important.

If you’d like to learn more about the equipment itself, we’ve covered it in detail in our guide: What is a HIAB Lorry?

Mobile Crane

A mobile crane is a standalone lifting unit that’s brought to the site either under its own power or on a flatbed truck. These cranes are capable of very heavy lifts and extreme reaches, making them useful for construction, large-scale infrastructure works, and oversized loads that exceed the capacity of a HIAB vehicle. However, because a mobile crane can’t transport the load itself, it often needs to work alongside haulage vehicles, increasing the number of operators and site movements.

When to Use a HIAB

A HIAB is the go-to solution when your project requires both lifting and transport in a single vehicle – or when a crane is needed on site but the load weights and lifting dimensions fit a lorry loader’s capabilities.

This combination can save time, reduce costs, and simplify logistics – especially on sites with space constraints or strict access requirements.

Typical scenarios where a HIAB excels:

  • Deliveries to restricted-access sites
HIABs are more manoeuvrable than large mobile cranes, making them perfect for urban projects, residential streets, or tight industrial yards.
  • Urgent, time-critical or same-day projects
With minimal set-up time, a HIAB can be in and out of site quickly, and for a new job, they can be dispatched quickly, loaded at the collection point, and on the road within minutes – keeping your project on schedule.
  • Multi-drop or multi-site deliveries
Because the same vehicle can load, transport, and unload, a HIAB can handle several multiple jobs in a single journeyperiod of time, reducing downtime and waiting.
  • Light, medium, and event heavy-weight lifts
HIABs can safely lift everything from site cabins and plant machinery to containers, palletised goods, steel frames, and even abnormal loads. You might be surprised just how much a lorry-mounted crane is capable of lifting.
  • Events and temporary structures
Ideal for lifting and positioning event booths, cabins, staging, or large signage where flexibility and precision are essential.

When to Use a Mobile Crane

Mobile cranes come into their own when a project demands lifting power, height, or flexibility beyond the capacity of a HIAB.

While they don’t transport loads themselves, their strength and adaptability make them indispensable for certain operations.

Situations where a mobile crane is the better choice:

  • Very heavy or oversized loads
Ideal for moving prefabricated building sections, beams, large steel frames, or industrial plant equipment that exceeds HIAB weight limits.
  • Exceptional height or reach requirements
Mobile cranes can safely lift materials onto high-rise rooftops, tall structures, or over obstructions such as other buildings, cranes, or site installations.
  • Complex lifting conditions
Where ground stability is a concern, mobile cranes can be set up with additional outriggers, ballast, and rigging to ensure safety during demanding lifts.
  • Limited site access for vehicles
If a lorry-mounted crane cannot get close enough to the load or lift location, a mobile crane can be positioned off-site or in a more accessible area and still complete the lift using extended booms.
  • Specialist rigging or tandem lifts
Mobile cranes are often required when lifting fragile or irregularly shaped loads, or when multiple cranes need to work together in a coordinated operation.

At Sussex Transport, we can manage the entire process with our mobile crane hire partners and control the lift using our contract lift service.

From site surveys and lift plans to risk assessments and full on-site execution, our team ensures that every lift is carried out to the highest safety and compliance standards, leaving you free to focus on the rest of your project.

HIAB vs Crane: Cost, Efficiency & Safety

In many scenarios, a HIAB is more cost-effective because you’re hiring just one vehicle to both lift and transport your load. They are by design a lower cost to run and operate.

This can also speed up the job, as there’s less set-up and fewer vehicle movements on site.

However, mobile cranes may be required for very large, high, or heavy lifts that a HIAB simply cannot handle. The trade-off is that mobile crane operations can require:

  • Additional personnel
  • Road closures or traffic management
  • Separate haulage vehicles
  • Increased cost

Safety is always the top priority.

Whether you choose a HIAB or mobile crane, Sussex Transport provides expert lifting services backed by decades of experience, trained operators, and meticulous planning.
