Crated Goods Moffett Transport to Harwell Campus: A Mystery Delivery

From specialist crate transport to an unexpected connection with particle physics, a recent Sussex Transport delivery for the Science Museum at Harwell Campus proved rather more interesting than it first appeared.

Not Just Another Moffett Delivery of Wooden Crates

At Sussex Transport, we’re used to moving all sorts of unusual loads. Some arrive with a fascinating backstory, while others keep us guessing long after the delivery is complete.

Our recent Moffett truck delivery to Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, near Didcot in Oxfordshire, certainly fell into the second category.

The job involved transporting large wooden crates for the Science Museum, using one of our Moffett-equipped vehicles.

From a transport perspective, crated goods are a familiar part of our work. Machinery, exhibition equipment, specialist components and other valuable items are often packed into purpose-built wooden crates for protection during transit.

But these particular crates had some rather intriguing markings.

HALO. Audemars Piguet. millimetre.

Three names that didn’t immediately mean a great deal to our driver, but which would eventually lead us to something quite extraordinary.

We didn’t get to peek inside, of course. The crates remained closed, just as they should.

But back at the office, curiosity got the better of us!

The Job: Specialist Crate Transport to Harwell, Oxfordshire

The delivery was arranged for the Science Museum, with Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire as the destination.

For Sussex Transport, the requirement was to move the crated goods using a suitable vehicle from our Moffett-equipped fleet.

Harwell Campus is home to a wide range of scientific research, engineering and technology organisations. Deliveries to specialist commercial and research locations can require careful planning, particularly when dealing with large or awkwardly packaged items.

Having the right transport equipment available is an important part of that planning.

On-Site Unloading with Our Manitou Truck-Mounted Forklift

Getting large wooden crates safely to their destination is only part of the job. Once the vehicle arrives, those crates still need to be unloaded and positioned, which isn’t always straightforward when dealing with bulky or specialist cargo.

For our Science Museum delivery at Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, our articulated curtainside vehicle was equipped with a Manitou truck-mounted forklift, allowing our driver to handle the crates directly at the delivery location.

As the photographs show, the Manitou was used to lift the large wooden crates from the side of our trailer, transport them across the site and position them at the designated building entrance.

This is exactly where a truck-mounted forklift comes into its own.

Rather than relying on the delivery location to provide suitable unloading machinery, our driver arrived with the equipment needed to complete the job.

The Benefits of Our Moffett-Equipped Transport Service

For specialist crate transport, having an accompanying forklift offers several practical advantages:

  • Self-sufficient unloading: Our truck-mounted forklift travels with the vehicle, reducing reliance on equipment being available at the destination.
  • Flexible crate handling: Suitable wooden crates can be lifted directly from the trailer and moved to their designated unloading area.
  • On-site manoeuvrability: The compact forklift can transport goods around suitable areas of a site and position them where they’re needed.
  • One coordinated service: Transport and unloading can be managed together, helping simplify delivery arrangements.
  • Suitable for specialist locations: Particularly useful for deliveries to exhibition venues, research facilities, commercial premises and project sites where unloading facilities may be limited.

Of course, every delivery requires consideration of the load’s weight, dimensions, handling points and site conditions to ensure the correct equipment is used.

For this particular job, the combination of our articulated vehicle and Manitou truck-mounted forklift provided a practical solution for delivering and positioning the large crated goods.

And while we still don’t know exactly what was inside those mysterious HALO crates, we do know they reached their destination with a little help from Sussex Transport!

It’s another great example of how the right vehicle, the right equipment and an experienced driver can make specialist deliveries that little bit simpler.

The Mystery Behind the Crates: What Is HALO?

Now, back to those interesting labels.

Once our driver shared the photographs, we decided to investigate the three names printed on the crates.

And that’s when this ordinary-looking transport job became a considerably more interesting story.

It turns out that HALO is the name of an extraordinary immersive art installation created by British artist duo Semiconductor, made up of Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt.

Originally commissioned by Swiss luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet for Art Basel in 2018, the installation combines particle physics, sound, light and engineering.

HALO uses real particle collision data collected at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.

The scientific data is transformed into a 360-degree visual experience, while 384 vertical wires respond to the same information to produce sound.

Rather than simply displaying scientific results on a screen, the installation allows visitors to experience the patterns and movements of particle collisions.

And the third name on our crates?

millimetre is one of the specialist fabrication companies credited with bringing the installation to life, alongside Polyspace and the artists.

Suddenly, those three mysterious names started to fit together rather nicely.

An Exhibition at Harwell Campus in November 2026

The connection became even more intriguing when we discovered that HALO was heading to Harwell Campus during November 2026.

The installation forms part of the campus’s Light Project, celebrating 80 years of scientific discovery and innovation.

Harwell is a particularly appropriate setting for an artwork inspired by particle physics, given the campus’s long association with scientific research and major facilities such as Diamond Light Source and the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source.

HALO is being presented at Tech Foundry 3, with public events and viewing opportunities taking place throughout November.

You can learn more about the exhibition on the official HALO at Harwell Campus website.

So, were our wooden crates carrying components of this remarkable installation?

The labels, the destination and the timing certainly suggest a connection.

But as we didn’t open the crates, we can’t confirm exactly what was inside.

Sometimes the mystery is part of the fun!

Crated Goods Transport for Exhibitions, Research Facilities and Commercial Projects

While the possible connection to HALO makes this particular job memorable, the delivery also demonstrates the variety of projects that require specialist transport.

Large crates are used across many industries, including:

  • Exhibitions and museums: Transporting packed displays, artwork, equipment and exhibition materials.
  • Manufacturing and engineering: Moving crated machinery, components and specialist equipment.
  • Scientific and research facilities: Delivering packaged instruments, equipment and project materials.
  • Construction and commercial projects: Transporting packaged equipment and other items requiring planned handling.
  • Events and installations: Delivering crated structures, displays and technical equipment to venues.

The transport requirements can vary considerably, which is why choosing the right vehicle and handling method matters.

Our fleet includes Moffett-equipped trucks, HIAB crane vehicles, articulated transport and other specialist vehicles.

This allows us to discuss the transport requirements of individual projects rather than assuming every load needs the same solution.

Another Interesting Delivery for the Sussex Transport Team

We may not have discovered the exact contents of our Science Museum crates, but we certainly uncovered an interesting story along the way.

What started as a Moffett truck delivery to Harwell Campus led us into a world of particle physics, immersive art, specialist fabrication and a rather famous Swiss watchmaker.

It’s a reminder that behind even the most ordinary-looking load, there can be a remarkable project taking shape.

For Sussex Transport, it’s another example of the diverse goods our team helps move around the country.

And for our driver, it’s another successful delivery, with a rather more interesting story attached than anyone initially expected.

Thanks to the driver for sending in the photographs. Keep them coming!
