A high-value lifting operation, restricted roof clearance and one carefully coordinated team. Sussex Transport rises to the challenge in Crawley.
At Sussex Transport, we’re no strangers to challenging lifting operations. From heavy machinery and specialist equipment to unusual structures and high-value assets, our contract lifting team regularly tackles projects where precision and careful planning are essential.
Our latest project in Crawley, West Sussex, was certainly one of those occasions.
The task? Safely lift an aircraft simulator valued at approximately £1.3 million from the ground floor to its new position on the first floor of a commercial building.
With limited headroom, a substantial piece of specialist equipment and very little room for error, this was a job that required the right people, the right lifting equipment and a carefully coordinated approach.
A £1.3 Million Load That Demanded Precision
Moving any heavy or awkward load between floors requires careful consideration, but when the equipment is valued at £1.3 million, the importance of a properly planned lifting operation becomes even clearer.
Aircraft simulators are sophisticated pieces of equipment, making their handling and positioning particularly important.
For this project, Sussex Transport was responsible for planning and executing the contract lift, supplying both the experienced lifting team and the specialist lifting equipment required to complete the move.
The simulator needed to be raised from its ground-floor position and carefully manoeuvred into place at first-floor level.
This wasn’t simply a case of lifting something from A to B. It required controlled movement, coordination between everyone involved and particular attention to the restrictions imposed by the building itself.
Working Around Restricted Roof Clearance
One of the biggest challenges was the available working space.
As the photographs demonstrate, the lifting operation took place inside a building with structural roof beams and limited overhead clearance.
These restrictions added another layer of complexity to the lift, particularly when considering the space required for the crane, lifting accessories and the simulator itself.
With the height of the building limiting the available room for manoeuvre, careful control of the lifting operation was essential.
Our team needed to work within these physical constraints while maintaining a safe and controlled movement of the valuable equipment.
It’s precisely the sort of challenge that demonstrates the importance of detailed lift planning and experienced personnel.
Specialist Lifting Beams and a Complete Contract Lift Team
To complete the operation, Sussex Transport supplied a full lifting team together with specialist spreader and lifting beams.
These lifting accessories play an important role when handling large, awkward or valuable loads.
Spreader beams can help distribute lifting forces across designated lifting points while providing a suitable lifting arrangement for the shape and dimensions of the load.
For this particular project, the lifting arrangement needed to accommodate both the aircraft simulator and the restricted space within the building.
The team worked together to control the lift, monitor the movement of the load and carefully position the simulator at first-floor level.
Having an experienced lifting team on site meant everyone could work together throughout the operation, from preparing the lifting arrangement to completing the final positioning.
Planning, Communication and Teamwork
Successful contract lifting is about much more than the equipment involved.
It requires planning, clear communication, experienced operators and cooperation between everyone on site.
For this project, Sussex Transport managed the lifting operation from planning through to successful execution, with our lifting personnel working alongside the client’s team.
Despite the restricted headroom and the challenges associated with moving such a valuable piece of equipment, the operation was completed successfully.
Our Lifting & Training Manager, Andy Packham, was particularly pleased with how everyone worked together.
“This was a great example of why proper planning and teamwork make such a difference. With a £1.3 million simulator to move and the restrictions we had with the roof, it certainly wasn’t a straightforward lift.
The whole Sussex Transport team were brilliant, and the client was fantastic to work with on the day too. Everyone understood what needed to happen, communication was excellent and the operation came together really well.
It’s always satisfying when you see the planning pay off, particularly on a job like this. A great effort from everyone involved.”
Another Successful Contract Lift in Crawley
With the simulator successfully moved into its new first-floor position, the project was another great example of the specialist lifting work undertaken by Sussex Transport across Sussex, Surrey, London and beyond.
Whether we’re moving a valuable piece of specialist equipment, relocating heavy machinery or positioning awkward loads within a restricted working environment, our approach remains the same.
Understand the challenge. Plan the operation. Bring the right team and equipment. Execute the lift safely.
A big thank you to everyone involved in the Crawley project, including our lifting team and the client for their excellent cooperation throughout the operation.
And thanks to the team for capturing some great photographs of a particularly interesting job!
