At Sussex Transport, we take lifting operations and safety training seriously – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for a little creativity along the way.
During one of our recent Fire Service crane operator training sessions, our Lifting and Training Manager, Andy Packham, introduced a fun and interactive “Lifting Game” designed to test skill, precision, and teamwork, all while reinforcing the critical principles of safe crane operation.
The exercise, which quickly became a favourite among the crew, challenged participants to demonstrate fine control, communication, and coordination by placing a car on top of a van – vital skills in both everyday lifting operations and emergency situations. By adding a competitive twist, Andy transformed what could have been a standard practice exercise into a lively, memorable, and deeply educational session.
“Training doesn’t always have to be formal to be effective,” said Andy. “When people are relaxed and engaged, they retain more, ask better questions, and ultimately perform more confidently on site.”
