Lorry Loader / HIAB trainee Scheme

Train on the Job with Sussex Transport

Become an Expert HIAB Driver & Lorry Loader Professional

We’re proud to grow our own talent. Our HIAB / Lorry Loader Trainee Scheme lets motivated drivers earn while they learn, building real skills with real mentors on real jobs.

Some job roles really suit a training programme that works alongside a current job, allowing the trainee to earn money as they gain experience, knowledge and confidence in future positions. HIAB / Lorry Loader roles blend professional HGV driving with lifting operations, problem-solving, and safety leadership. If you enjoy varied work, different sites, and the satisfaction of “lifting solutions,” this is for you.

Although an aspiring driver can gain a lorry loader certificate and training qualification in a reasonably short timeframe it certainly doesn’t provide the critical experience needed to be a successful operator who can turn their hand to multiple loads and lift types, across a variety of vehicles, collection and delivery points. This is where on the job training really wins out, it’s why we are real advocates of training your way into the position, and why we offer driver training programmes at Sussex Transport.

Lorry Loader Lifting Training Allmi

Let’s start with some reasons why someone decides to become a lorry loader / operator, and why?

Some (fairly few and far between) grow up knowing they want to operate a lorry loader / hiab vehicle.
Some look for an opportunity to add to their HGV skillset, increasing employability and income
Some want to combine a passion for driving with engineering and creating solutions
Some have operated crane vehicles for builders merchants (different operations) and want to move into larger vehicles or cranes
Some didn’t / don’t even really know these vehicles existed – but love the opportunity to learn.
…and there are those who work in haulage, end up with a logistics provider like Sussex Transport and decide they want to move into crane operations

All of the above, and more… are very welcome at Sussex Transport.

The opportunity to work alongside our Appointed Person (who organises and plans all lifting projects), lift supervisors & slinger signallers, plus our very own industry qualified training manager who ensures those who embark on a training programme with us learn on the job and not just in the classroom. When you join Sussex Transport we’ll work together to ensure you are ready to move on at every stage of the training and ensure confidence and skills are continually improving.

A recent recruit had the following to say.
The skills I have learnt and the variety of work and locations I have been exposed to have my role as trainee Crane driver very enjoyable. I have learnt a lot in the year I have been here but never once felt under pressure. Everyone from directors, management, office staff and fellow drivers have been very welcoming and forthcoming with good advice. The fact I could train in something I’ve always been interested in yet still have a salary allowing me to raise a young family is very rare and I look forward to paying back the confidence shown in me going forward.

All of our lifting team are confident and capable of operating multiple crane types and to carry out the following types of work;

  • Cabins, Containers & modular buildings.
  • Structures, Sculptures.
  • Construction materials.
  • Unbalanced, Abnormal & Wide loads.
  • Structural Steel work
  • Plant & machinery

We also ensure the team are qualified in a variety of other skills like Slinger Signaller, Load Security and more…
