Appointed Person (AP) Training


Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide candidates with the knowledge in order for them to understand the role and responsibility of the Appointed Person for lifting operations. Following successful completion of the course candidates will be able to identify and implement safe systems of work for lifting operations including writing risk assessments and method statements.

Target Delegates

Our appointed persons courses are aimed at anyone who is required to plan safe systems of work, using lifting equipment, regardless of your level of experience using one or more types of lifting equipment. A working knowledge and experience of lifting operations is strongly recommended, but not essential. Candidates must be fluent in English, be able to carry out basic mathematical calculations using a calculator and also undertake scale drawings.

  • Rated Capacity Indicators (R.C.I) and Safe Working Loads (SWL)
  • Lifting accessories
  • Types of accessories and use
  • Slinging techniques
  • Down rating of accessories
  • Sling angles
  • Communications
  • Writing risk assessments and method statements
  • Undertaking scale drawings

Duration

3-5 Days (depending on experience and candidate numbers)

Certification

Successful candidates will be issued with either a NPORS or a Sussex Transport | Training Division 'Trained Operator' Card.

Course Assessment

For successful completion of the course, candidates will be required to:

  • Demonstrate a suitable level of knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, industry best practice and technical elements
  • Select a suitable crane & configuration for the lifting operation
  • Select suitable lifting accessories and method of attachment
  • Create scale drawings which clearly show the crane position and site layout Produce a clear and effective method statement and risk assessment

The last day of the course will involve undertaking the Technical Tests.  These include a Theory Test, Planning a lifting operation, Writing a risk assessment and Writing a method statement.
