Last month we were asked to deliver a cabin to the building site of the former Beach Hotel in Worthing which has recently been demolished after over 75 years to make way for a new development comprising of a 76 bedroom hotel, restaurant and spa facilities, together with 49 residential apartments and car parking for 96 cars!
Worthing boasts many architectural treasures .. 212 buildings are listed!
In England, a building or structure is defined as “listed” when it is placed on a statutory register of buildings of “special architectural or historic interest” by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
One of Worthing’s most recognised structures is the Dome Cinema.
An internationally recognised landmark following extensive overseas publicity attracted by the intensive campaign to save the Dome, its distinctive octagonal tower and roof, prominent on Worthing’s seafront, clearly distinguishes the town’s shoreline from that of any other seaside resort. For almost 100 years South Coast fishermen have used it as a navigational aid, and many still do.
The Worthing Lido was also a popular tourist destination before flying abroad for sunshine became popular. The Lido pool contained purified seawater and was open until 1988 when it held dolphins from the Brighton Sealife Centre for a year whilst their permanent accommodation was being rebuilt! In the Winter of 1989 the pool was finally built over and the present day family entertainment centre was developed on the site.
