Well we can’t guarantee you snow at Christmas, but what we can guarantee is that Sussex Transport will always be involved in the bulk collections and deliveries of Christmas trees on their artic flatbed trailers.
The UK’s most famous Christmas Tree is the one that is erected every year in Traflagar Square, this has been an ongoing tradition since 1947, the tree is given as a gift of gratitude by the city of Oslo to the people of Britain as a thank you for supporting them during World War II .
The Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree is usually a Norwegian Spruce, over 20 metres high and 50-60 years old. It is selected from the forests surrounding Oslo with great care several months, even years in advance. The Norwegian foresters who look after it describe it fondly as “The Queen of the Forest”.
The tree is felled in November during a ceremony in which the Lord Mayor of Westminster, the British ambassador to Norway and the Mayor of Oslo participate. It is brought to the UK by sea, then completes its journey by truck. A specialist rigging team erects it in the square using a hydraulic crane. It is decorated in traditional Norwegian fashion, with vertical strings of lights – these days being energy efficient light bulbs!
Traditionally, the lighting ceremony takes place on the 1st Thursday of December – this year falling on the 5th December and festivities begin at 6pm. This event signals the countdown to Christmas in London.
So whether your preference is a 20 metre fir, a 10 metre pine or a 2 metre spruce you can rest assured that Sussex Transport have the vehicle ability to collect, deliver and erect whatever the size of tree.
