Coastguard Tower HIAB Move

Moving a large, metal tower structure on one of our HIAB lorries – another unusual job for Sussex Transport recently!

selsey chris hards 2

The Selsey coastguard tower has been a familiar sight at this Sussex seaside town for many years – with 50 steps and 42 metres high, it is now beyond repair and has been dismantled – and replaced by a new radio tower.

The Coastguard Rescue Team at Selsey do a fantastic job and comprise of volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officers from the local area trained in Search and Rescue techniques-  who are ready to respond 7 days of the week, 365 days of the year.

Selsey CRT are a specialist Mud Rescue Team and responsible for all incidents on or beyond the shore line from Pagham around the coast to Thorney Island. Each year they respond to between 60 and 100 call outs, ranging from lost children to persons trapped in mud.

When a call comes in to Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team for an incident at Medmerry Beach, near Selsey, it’s more than likely to be a leftover from WW2.

During the Second World War, Selsey was the site of air to ground attack practise.  Due to recent erosion the old bombing range was flooded which means it’s quite common for World War Two bombs to appear on the beach or be washed up – this has included a 500lb depth charge bomb dropped from a plane during the war!

While waiting for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to complete the controlled explosion of this bomb, they found a depth charge, several bombs and multiple amounts of ordnance as well!
